]]>The 2013 Commercial Vehicle Show got off to a flying start today with thousands of visitors flocking to Birmingham’s NEC. Crowds gathered to see world and UK premières of a host of new vans, trucks, technologies and associated products.

Here are some images of Driver First Assist's important demonstration of how their new programme will be saving lives!

DFA is a new initiative intended to train truck drivers in how to deal with any road traffic accidents that they may come across. It’s the brainchild of industry stalwart David Higginbottom, with the support of leading organisations representing the emergency services and road transport.

The scheme stems from the chilling statistic that 46% of UK road fatalities could be avoided if appropriate first aid was administered before the arrival of the emergency services. Other secondary objectives include hastening the post-accident re-opening of roads, a government priority under the CLEAR project, and improving the public image of road transport as a whole. It works by volunteers undertaking training, designed to be accepted as a Driver CPC module, which extends beyond Workplace First Aid with the inclusion of basic accident scene management procedures. This includes providing full and accurate reporting of the situation to all suitable resources to be dispatched. A smartphone app, provided by BT and Google, will shortly be available to assist in this.

Following successful completion of the training, drivers can then apply for membership of DFA. The sanctioning of the scheme by the emergency services means that when they arrive on scene, they will be expecting to find a DFA member to act as first point of contact, and provide an accurate briefing. More information will be available from the scheme’s website, which was launched on the same day 9th April.

DAF Trucks were one of the first to unveil new Models at the Show.

With its Euro 6 XF heavy truck range launched late last year, DAF chose the Birmingham CV show for the worldwide premiere of its volume ranges, the CF and LF.
DAF’s Chief Engineer, Ron Borsboom, unveiled the two new ranges that currently account for the bulk of their UK sales. “Today the story continues and we present two more jewels in the DAF crown – the new LF truck for distribution applications, developed in the UK and manufactured in the UK. Also the Euro 6 CF, a very versatile truck for many different applications,” he said.
Apart from the necessary Euro 6 compliance, CF and LF operators can expect the same approach to modernisation and redesign as has been demonstrated in the XF. Covering the widest of weight ranges between them, the LF’s two-axle rigids from 7.5 to 19 tonnes, and the CF’s rigids and tractors from 18 to 44 tonnes, will make a significant impact as they upgrade the market leader’s offering.

Cool customers
The PX-5 (4.5 litre), and PX-7 (6.7 litre) engines that live in the LF and CF chassis take the same after treatment as the MX-11 and MX-13 units, together with chassis redesigns that have been driven by the need for revised, and much-improved cooling – it has had to up its performance by 40%. The need for better thermal control has forced DAF to make very extensive chassis changes, but it has taken the opportunity to kill several birds with this stone, by improving handling, cutting weight and boosting safety with a redesign of the cab mounting that allows the cab to move rearwards in heavy impacts and sacrifice the rear of the cab against the trailer, rather than injure the driver.

New looks
CF and LF get a familial look to them, in concert with the XF, and cabin interiors are either extensively revised or new. The LF’s dash looks particularly clean. The new multi-function steering wheel is aimed at keeping the driver’s hands on the wheel more than before and DPA (driver performance assistant) with a bold five inch colour display will be inescapable for most drivers. Borsboom was clear that the approach is to reward good driving and not to punish bad. “The DPA coaching system in not based on punishment,” he said. The new chassis take the same modular approach as the XF, in that major components can be sited in a number of locations around the chassis, depending on operator’s needs. Fuel and adBlue tanks, after treatment boxes, batteries and spare wheels can be shuffled to fit the bill. All the more need to get a salesman who is totally on the ball when it comes to specifying your chassis.

MG have teamed up with double BTCC champion Jason Plato and rising BTCC star Sam Tordoff - who will both race in the all new MG6 GT.

The cars will be prepared by Triple Eight Race Engineering, one of the most successful constructors in touring car racing. And completing the ‘dream team’ are principal sponsors Tesco Fuels with their Momentum 99 brand, Castrol and KX energy drink completing an all-British line-up.

MG KX Momentum Racing made its debut at Brands Hatch at the 2012 Dunlop MSA BTCC championship.

]]>BINTM was back for 2012! Set within the fashionista world of Clothes Show Live, visitors got-up close and personal with the BINTM girls and watched the BINTM Live catwalk featuring the models from this year's series and joining in with the Model Masterclass sessions.

On the Catwalk were Anita, Anne, Emma G, Emma S, Jennifer, Kellie, Letitia, Lisa, Madeleine, Penelope, Rissikat, Roxanne & Tasmin who have all starred in this years cycle.

This was the first time all the girls have been seen together since the winner of the show had been crowned Britain & Ireland's Next Top Model.

Opened by over 40 of the UK's top celebs, experts and designers - not to mention stylists, industry experts, makeup artists and models...this year's show started in style as Daisy Lowe made her catwalk debut in our spectacular Fashion Theatre show.

Henry Holland and Grace Woodward were the perfect hosts as Peter Andre gave the girls something extra to scream about! And not just that visitors to the show included famous reality TV stars who fronted the stands of their retail collections, while visitors were inspired by top designers including Bora Aksu, Henry Holland, John Rocha and Mark Fast.

]]>JLS appearing at the Clothes Show Live 2012 on Monday 10th December, hosts Henry Holland and Grace Woodward introduced the UK’s hottest boyband, JLS at the start of every Suzuki Fashion Theatre show. The boys performed their exclusive new DJ set Live; see Marvin spinning the tunes as Aston, Oritse and JB expertly got the crowd going with a high energy mix of RnB and pop!

On joining the Clothes Show Live line up, JLS said, “We can’t wait to get on the stage and share some of our favourite music with the crowds. Clothes Show Live is always such a fun day out, we can’t wait to be a part of it.”
