Electric themed capsule collection marks second collaboration between Felder Felder and leaders in innovative sustainability BMW.

German twins Daniela and Annette Felder, of London based design duo Felder Felder, today unveil their 10th Anniversary Collection featuring exclusively up-cycled and sustainable fabrics.

The collection’s hero piece is the “Carbon Dress”, inspired by BMW i and created using carbon fibre from BMW’s electric vehicle programme.

Carbon material makes up 97% of the fringe-detailed, metallic grey skater dress, which took over 100 hours to make. I guess you could call the WRX NB-R a 'Wolf in Sheep's Clothing', that is, if any WRX can be described as a Sheep?

 

So why NB-R?  Nurburgring of course!

 

From time to time you come across very rare and special limited edition cars that have gone unnoticed in the automotive sector and the SUBARU IMPREZA WRX NB-R is certainly that!

 

I was lucky enough to recently acquire this 'BugEye' in pristine 'original' condition, having only been driven 22000 miles and being specially imported from Japan by its one and only original owner into the UK in June 2006 as nearly new with a few miles on the the clock.  

 

Manufacturer in Japan in June 2003 as one of the last WRX NB-R's with an EJ205 engine and AVCS (Active Valve Control System) coupled with an MHI TD04L turbocharger. The engine produces a whopping standard 250BHP (184 kW) at 6000 rpm, considerably more than the UK WRX at that time, that was developing 215 - 221BHP depending upon the Model.  Where the UK WRX STI was developing 261BHP.  WRX NB-R Special EquipmentWRX NB-R Special Equipment

 

So how do you spot one?  Well here are a few of the characteristics together with some original images produced by Subaru for the JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) at the time to help you identify the elusive 250BHP WRX NB-R.

Rev. A (2000)

August 2000 brings the 2001MY WRX NB sedan. It has an EJ205 with AVCS (Active Valve Control System) coupled with an MHI TD04L turbocharger. The engine produces 250 PS (184 kW) at 6000 rpm with 34 kg/m (333 N/m) at 3600 rpm. The wheels are 16 inch in diameter. The car uses 2 pot/1 pot front and rear brakes. The front brake rotors are ventilated while the rear are solid disks. It has a Torsen rear Limited Slip Differential and a 4.44 final drive ratio. The transmission has close-ratio gears unique to Subaru of Japan at that point in time. The car has a curb weight of 1340 kg (2954 lb).

 

Rev. B (2001)

The 2002MY WRX NB sedan debuts on September 2001. The mechanical specifications are similar to the previous year's model but the curb weight has been increased to 1350kg (2976 lb).

 

Rev. C (2002)

The WRX NB-R sedan is released on November 2002. The power and torque ratings are the same as the previous year. The wheel diameters are increased to 17" in size. The rear brake rotor is changed to a ventilated disk, leaving the car to use only ventilated disks for braking. The car has 4 pot/2 pot front and rear brakes. The rear wing is on wing risers. The car now weighs 1361 kg (3000 lb).

 

Rev. D (2003)

The WRX line receives a body exterior update and an improved transmission.

Since the launch of DS 3 in 2010, more than 390,000 customers have succumbed to the charms of the stylish Parisian car around the world and 100,000 here in the UK. Both the hatchback and Cabrio versions impress with a wide range of customisation options, providing the best combination of style, comfort and dynamism.

To celebrate the launch of New DS 3 and DS 3 Cabrio, the DS brand has created an advertising campaign based on the primary reason for purchasing a premium supermini: style. The campaign features the remarkable fashion icon and legendary business woman, Iris Apfel.

Iris Apfel, famous for her avant-garde style, is one of the most influential women in the world of fashion.  This inspiring lady, aged 94, is instantly recognisable thanks to her oversized glasses and bold combinations of jewellery and accessories. Previously the chief editor of Women’s Wear Daily, Apfel supervised the decoration of the White House for nine Presidents of the United States between 1950 and 1992. It is not uncommon to find her in the media or to discover an exhibition dedicated to her and her style, for example the recent exhibition at MOMA in New York.

Today she becomes the ambassador for New DS 3 and is at the heart of the international advertising campaign which launches across DS Automobiles’ Facebook and Twitter channels in the UK and France.

The campaign will run on television screens and outdoor displays from 26 February in the UK and 1 March in France. Other European countries will follow.

'Driven By Style' is a colourful campaign that tells the story of a dream meeting between two characters and the sharing of the same vision.

The television commercial was directed by Jérémie Rozan from Standard Productions. The chosen music 'Odd Night' was composed by DVNO and can be heard exclusively on the TV advertisement 'Driven by Style'. It will be officially released on iTunes in the coming weeks. DVNO, also known as Mehdi Pinson, is a French musician, multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer, producer, entertainer and DJ. He is best known by Ed Banger fans for his guest appearance on the song ‘DVNO’ with fellow countrymen Justice​.

The new vans, which replace a mixed fleet of leased and short term hired vehicles, will be used by Two Rivers Housing’s home-based technicians who provide maintenance services for its 4,000 homes in Gloucestershire and Herefordshire.   

Two Rivers Housing has specified all of its new Citroën vans in Polar White paint. The Relay 35 Crew Cab dropside truck has a single cab, tool pod and dropside body. Supplied by Warners of Cheltenham, a Citroën Business Centre, the new vans have been acquired on 4-year/60,000 mile Automotive Leasing contract hire agreements.

It has also opened its first official pop-up retail kiosks in Buchanan Galleries and the St Enoch Shopping Centre.
 
The superstore in the heart of Glasgow will sell a large range of official Games merchandise and will open for business on 28 June. Extending to around 12,500 sq ft, the specially designed shop will also stock a number of special edition products which would normally only be available at Games venues.
 
All Team Scotland merchandise will be available in the shop which is one of more than 40 retail units which will operate across the city and in venues. 
 
Situated in two of Glasgow’s busiest shopping hubs, the pop-up kiosks will stock a wide range of official merchandise including Glasgow 2014 and Team Scotland clothing for adults and kids, souvenirs such as mugs, key rings and pin badges as well as replicas of our cheeky mascot Clyde.
 
The kiosks, which will be open seven days a week, until the middle of August,  give sports fans another chance to get their hands on official Glasgow 2014 merchandise, which is already on sale from the official outlet store in Central Station. Merchandise can also be bought online at https://shop.glasgow2014.com//.
 
The store and kiosks, are creating new jobs as part of a drive which will see several hundred temporary jobs created in Glasgow to handle the sale of official Commonwealth Games merchandise.

Jaguar is to build six perfect reproductions of the original, race-bred Lightweight E-type that was created in 1963. The new cars are the ‘missing’ six vehicles from Jaguar’s Lightweight E-type project, which originally started in February 1963 with the objective of building 18 ‘Special GT E-type Cars’.
 
Only 12 of the aluminium bodied Lightweight E-types were eventually built, the last in 1964, the remaining six designated chassis numbers having lain dormant, until now.
 
The new cars will be hand-built in-house by Jaguar’s finest craftsmen. Each car will be constructed to the exact specifications of their original 1960s forebears – including the 3.8-litre straight-six engine.
 
The Lightweight carried approximately 114kg (250lb) less weight than a standard E-type, thanks to its all-aluminium body and engine block, a lack of interior trim and exterior chrome work and a host of further weight-saving features including lightweight, hand-operated side windows.
 
Jaguar expects a high demand for the six Lightweight E-types. Established Jaguar collectors, especially those with historic race car interests, will be prioritised amongst those potential customers who express interest.

    Melanie, the new presenter of BT Sport’s MotoGP TV coverage, has previously owned a Fiat 500C and wanted another. But she was also looking for the added performance that a 140bhp Abarth 500 can offer.

    “Having owned the Fiat 500C before, I knew I wanted to go back into a convertible, but I also had my eye on an Abarth,” says Melanie. “So when Abarth told me there was 500C version, I was really excited. And just look at it – it’s fabulous.”

    The soft top of the Abarth 500C stands out for its refined electric linkage and quality engineering solutions, such as the foldaway glass rear window and the built-in centrally positioned high mounted stop light.

    Aston Martin has a long association with James Bond – Skyfall is the fifth Bond movie in which the DB5 has made an appearance. Other models have also played a part over the years, from the DBS in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, the V8 Vantage Volante in The Living Daylights, the Vanquish in Die Another Day and the DBS in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.     It is therefore fitting that the DB5 was prepared for its recent role, by Aston Martin Works, the spiritual home of the marque at Newport Pagnell.

    Aston Martin Works continues to meet the needs of owners of every model with expertise spanning from the DB2 to the One-77 supercar.

    The brief was to ‘clone’ the DB5 owned by the makers of the Bond movies, EON Productions, to provide a second car for filming. The project started with sourcing an appropriate car, facilitated by Aston Martin Works.

    Once the car was sourced, it was prepared by the Aston Martin Works heritage team, who perform restoration miracles on all Aston Martins from the DB2 onwards. In just a matter of weeks the DB5 was transformed from green with beige interior to the stunning Silver Birch paintwork with black trim, which was ‘distressed’ so as not to appear brand new. The final touch to the paintwork was to add a keyline on the roof to represent the exit hatch for the ejector seat. In addition to the aesthetic works, the car also required a complete mechanical overhaul in preparation for filming.

    Air display and competition pilot Gerald Cooper, from Lincolnshire, won the European Freestyle Aerobatic Championship in Slovakia last weekend beating 21 of the best European aerobatic pilots.  Competing in the new XtremeAir XA41 high performance monoplane, Gerald became the first ever Brit to receive a gold medal in Unlimited aerobatics in the history of aerobatic sport flying.  

    Gerald flew a freestyle routine choreographed to demonstrate the art of precision flying necessary to succeed at the top end of Unlimited competition aerobatics.  Gerald demonstrated the impressive capabilities of this new carbon fibre aircraft with its superb power to weight ratio.  Performing a combination of high-speed, animated gyroscopic figures that seemingly defy the laws of physics and aerodynamics, Gerald and the XA41 equally impressed the judging panel.

    Alan Cassidy MBE, British Aerobatic Association (BAeA) Chairman explained: "Gerald was flying the XA41 in only his second international competition in this radical new, all-carbon, high-performance monoplane among a field of 22 of Europe’s top competition pilots. Gerald's innovative style, sometimes quirky, sometimes using the XA41's remarkable control authority at low speed, set him apart from his competitors in a way that gained the approval of the ten International judges."

    Gerald believes the XA41’s strength and ability to respond faster, turn quicker and climb better than its competitors is largely responsible for his Gold medal in the recent European Unlimited Aerobatic Championship.

    The XtremeAir XA41 is a new carbon fibre aircraft that has superior power to weight ratio providing lots of room for a creative pilot’s imagination to invent new figures whilst expanding their own envelope.  Gerald describes the XA41 as ‘a fast, good looking and incredibly light to the touch. It is also a capable tourer – with a range in excess of 900 miles – ideal for transit between air displays and aerobatic competitions.’

    Flat out the XA41 is capable of over 220mph and has a roll rate in excess of 500 degrees per second, which is one and a half times round per second. It has a climb rate of 3,500ft per minute.  It is light on the controls and is comparable to a Formula One race car. 

    It is the XA41’s impressive power to weight ratio combined with Gerald’s imaginative freestyle technique that creates such a dynamic display, demonstrating why Gerald is currently ranked as seventh in the world for competition aerobatics and has been the British Aerobatic Champion at Unlimited level for the past three years.  

    Reflecting on his win Gerald commented: "Winning this event was a real surprise in only my second season flying this new aeroplane. For me, this award is recognition of all the hard work on engineering, management and development by the fantastic team we have at One Sky Aviation without whom competing – and winning - would not be possible."

    Alan Cassidy added: “This is a great result for Gerald and for the British Unlimited Aerobatic Team. Gerald's individual Freestyle Gold, the first ever by a UK pilot in an Unlimited European or World Championship, shows once again that Team GB is able to compete at World level in powered sport aerobatics despite the complete absence, so far, of any backing from the usual sporting lottery funds administered by Sport UK.”

    With Sergio Pininfarina passing away this week the Prancing Horse loses one of the men most closely connected to Ferrari.

    "An exceptional person," Luca di Montezemolo said, "who connected his name indissolubly with our history and our success. Sergio was one of the most important advocates of Made in Italy all over the world, a man who gave Italy credibility and splendor. An example not just of an entrepreneur, but also known for his civic duties, he spread with great passion for his country. He demonstrated it as President of Confindustria, Member of Parliament and Senator for life. Calling his relation with Ferrari legendary is insufficient. First with Enzo and then with me, he planned some of the most iconic models, such as the Testarossa or the Enzo, just to name two. I wish to remind you of the work we’ve done together for the Maserati Quattroporte, which remains one of the most beautiful cars ever built. He was a great advocate of Italian design, thanks to his sense for elegance. He was part of Ferrari’s board of administration for many years and I will always be profoundly connected to him, so much that I wanted to dedicate a model to him and his son Andrea: the SA Aperta."

    Sergio Pininfarina had a close relationship regarding collaboration with Enzo Ferrari and Luca di Montezemolo, for exceptional teamwork and great understanding. This lead to models from the Prancing Horse, which embellished the history of cars. All GT serial models from Maranello, since the 1952 Ferrari 212 Inter Cabriolet, have been designed by Pininfarina in Turin, where Sergio became President in 1966 following his father Battista.

    The unique collaboration between Ferrari and Pininfarina was always based on the common ground of research and development on the highest level, always producing the most innovative and elegant cars for over 60 years. Pininfarina was not only responsible for the serial cars - such as the 1958 250 GT Coupé, the 1968 365GTB4 "Daytona" or the 1984 Testarossa - but also for one-off models and such produced in limited editions, starting with the 375MM commissioned by Roberto Rossellini for Ingrid Bergman in 1954, up to the 2002 Enzo Ferrari.

    Celebrating the car designs of a classic period in time, the Colours of 1968 collection from Driver’s Selection by Porsche Design pays homage to the colour spectrum of 911 in the late ‘60s: Tangerine, Polo Red, Irish Green and Ossi Blue. These charismatic colours conjure up the spirit of the era and add a touch of retro fun to the collection, which includes items for all the family.

    In the 1960’s my late Father Conrad Davis (known to everyone who knew him as CON) was the owner of a Vauxhall Cresta PA Estate car, one of only 200 ever made and indeed one was owned by Her Majesty The Queen at the time for many years.     "ARE RARE CARS TODAY"
    The Cresta PA is probably the most well-known version. It mimicked the American fashion for giant tailfins, wrap-around windows, "major league" chromework and whitewall tyres but in an understated way compared to the Cadillacs and Buicks of the time. It bears a strong resemblance to a 1955 Packard Caribbean. All factory-built PA's were 4-Door Saloons, the Estate cars were converted by Friary of Basingstoke, Hampshire and are rare cars today.

    Although ‘Cherished Numbers’ are a common sight today, in 1962 it wasn’t such a ‘big-deal’.  My Father (who as a Businessman was always ahead of the trends) then chose to purchase from the local DVLA Office a number that spelt his name ‘CON’ & had his lucky number 7 in it - CON 7.
     
    Many happy family years were spent traveling in CON 7 around Europe & the UK by my brother & I with Mum & Dad.     Mladá Boleslav, 21st June, 2012 – ŠKODA AUTO presented its concept for the brand’s new museum today at its headquarters in Mladá Boleslav in the Czech Republic. Following completion of an extensive renovation in December 2012, visitors will be able to experience the history, development and production of the long-standing Czech automobile manufacturer hands-on. ŠKODA AUTO wants the redesigned museum to allow people to learn about the origins of today’s global brand. The new museum is housed in one of the first ŠKODA factory buildings.
     
    Together, ŠKODA and Mladá Boleslav firmly belong at the heart of the European automobile industry. The museum reopening underlines once again how important ŠKODA AUTO’s history is to its current brand identity. Highlights of Czech engineering expertise will be on display over an area of 1,800 m2, including around 45 automobiles, bicycles and motorcycles as well as a wide range of other exhibits from the company’s history.
     
    The exhibition incorporates the latest interaction and communications findings to present ŠKODA history from different angles and appeal to the broadest-possible target audience. Additional restored ŠKODA vehicles will therefore be regularly integrated into the exhibition. Alternating exhibits in this way will allow constant new discoveries and surprises, and encourage visitors to return to the museum, located adjacent to the brand’s main plant in Mladá Boleslav. Additional special exhibitions and an attractive supplementary programme will ensure that the museum makes a lively contribution to ŠKODA corporate culture and public life in Mladá Boleslav."IMPRESSIVE NEW LOOK FOR ŠKODA MUSEUM"
     
    Margit Adamová Černá, head of the ŠKODA Museum, explains: “ŠKODA’s rich past will not only be presented in depth in the new museum, but also brought to life in an emotional way for the first time.” 
     
    The realignment of the ŠKODA Museum will also play a key role in brand communications. The museum’s attractive design and clear structure reflect the ŠKODA brand’s core values: a focus on the essential, a people-centred approach and the element of surprise in “simply clever” details.
     
    Visitors can experience a fascinating selection of historic ŠKODA vehicles in the new ŠKODA Museum and familiarise themselves with the main phases in the development of the automobile. “The museum will present the historic ŠKODA collection in a fresh and modern design that fits perfectly with the architecture of the former factory buildings,” adds Professor Thomas Hundt, the creative director responsible for museum and exhibition design at jangled nerves agency from Stuttgart.
     
    Three topic areas bring history, development and location to life
     
    The ŠKODA Museum will be divided into three areas that guide the visitor through the history of the company and its vehicle development:
     
    Automotive “gems” from different eras will be on display in the “Tradition” section. The visitor will find not only attractive cars, but also inspiring contrasts. Different ŠKODA brand values are highlighted under the headings “What drives us”, “What is important to us” and “What challenges us”. Historic vehicles are displayed in pairs to show visitors trends in automotive development. Further exhibits in display cases, wall charts and a permanent video presentation provide additional information to back up these impressions.
     
    In the “Evolution” section, the tour of ŠKODA history begins with company founders Václav Klement and Václav Laurin. ŠKODA vehicles presented in chronological order illustrate the most important milestones in vehicle development. Displayed on “shelves”, a collection of automotive icons provides visitors with an impressive overview of alternative vehicle exhibits. The room also features a parallel series of images and exhibits showcasing ŠKODA’s technical history. Media installations, films and interactive boards offer additional explanation of the exhibits. A so-called “ŠKODALab” also provides a glimpse of the future, while the adjacent library allows more in-depth research into the brand’s history.
     
    The third major exhibition area is all about “Production” and restoration, focusing on Mladá Boleslav’s key role as central production location and wellspring of the company’s tradition. In the “Workshop”, automobiles from earlier days are restored using the latest methods. Four raised platforms display cars in various stages of restoration – from “barn finds” to “gems“, with additional exhibits presented on a workbench. Large-scale picture panels, flip albums and projections bring the historic production facility to life. A panorama cinema offers an up-close experience of modern-day production.
    Multifunctional design with space for large-scale events
     
    The L&K hall in the heart of the museum is a multifunctional auditorium with 930 m2 of space for events and special exhibitions. This function room can be expanded and opened up to the “Tradition” and “Production” exhibition areas.

    Citihenge, led by sculptor Tommy Gun, took a design team three months to create.  The ambitious piece of art, built using 18 scrap cars, stands at over five metres tall. Each henge is five metres wide and the commanding structure weighs a remarkable 36 tonnes.

    Gun, a self-taught artist who specialises in big sculptures often made from machine parts, has exhibited at Chelsea Flower Show and The Grand Designs Show, Olympia, and was commissioned to produce a sculpture for the Tour de France.  The installation is the latest in a series of cultural creative projects undertaken by ŠKODA, which has included giant cakes, a car in a cage and collaborations with musicians Anastacia and DJ Tiësto.

    The beacon of economical motoring will remain at Potters Fields for two days before touring the UK, with a move to the Goodwood Festival of Speed and its celebration of car culture, in West Sussex from 28th June – 1st July.

    Building on the brand’s strong heritage, the new Bowler EXR S is the first Bowler engineered for road use.  It shares the EXR’s hydroformed base chassis (with the engine moved 300mm rearward) and various switchgear, light clusters and grilles, all from the Range Rover Sport.  The EXR S also shares the same strong and lightweight composite body panels with its competition-bred stablemate.
     
    The Bowler EXR S is fitted with a modified version of the Range Rover Sport’s supercharged 5.0-litre V8 producing 550 bhp and 705 Nm.  With such power and torque available in a package as light as 1800 kg, accelerating to 60 mph takes just 4.2 seconds and top speed is limited to 155 mph.  The EXR S boasts the six-speed ZF automatic transmission and E-diff from the Range Rover Sport 5.0-litre V8 Supercharged.

    Ferrari, 2012 Ferrari’s clients and enthusiasts across the world have once again demonstrated their extraordinary generosity. Over the last two weeks, the online auction organised by www.ferrari.com raised over 1.8 million euro. That significant sum will now be donated to help the families of the victims of the earthquakes that struck Emilia-Romagna on May 20th and 29th, many of whom died at their workplace.

    It took only the slightest encouragement for the Ferrari community to mobilise and bids were soon pouring in from all over the world. Naturally enough, expectations were running high for the 599XX which sold in the end to an American client for over 1.4 million euro. This exclusive car is a real one-off and will sport a special commemorative plaque signed by Chairman Luca di Montezemolo and the two Scuderia drivers. It will also be personally delivered to its owner by Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa at the next Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

    The F60 nose-cone is bound for the USA too, as it was purchased by a Malaysian client who put in a bid of 23,000 euro.

    The engine from the F2008, which won the Constructors’ World title in 2008, will instead be wending its way to Great Britain having made 80,000 euro, almost twice its reserve price.

    There was also an enthusiastic response to the rest of the auction with multiple bids made on all of the lots going under the hammer, including Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa’s helmets and Giancarlo Fisichella’s racing suit.

    “A pole position result: I knew I could count on the big-heartedness of the Ferraristi but they’ve still managed to surprise me once again,” declared Ferrari Chairman, Luca di Montezemolo. “I would like to thank all the clients, collectors and enthusiasts that did their bit. Their bids have sent out a message of warmth and solidarity to the people in our region affected by this tragedy.”

    The sum raised by the auction includes spontaneous donations sent to Maranello by fans and enthusiasts the world over, including a Russian client who generously gave €100,000, and the proceeds from the sales of the Scuderia Ferrari watches.

Therefore, registrations remain open for the final 400 spaces.

    The Le Mans 24 hour race is legendary and the greatest challenge that motorsport has to offer. This weekend, June 16/17, many Porsche customer teams from Europe and the USA will tackle the 80th running of the French long distance motor race.

    Porsche works drivers and double Le Mans class winners Marc Lieb (Germany) and Richard Lietz (Austria) will also be racing for points in the new World Endurance Championship with the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR fielded by the Felbermayr-Proton team. With 16 overall and 98 class victories, Porsche is the most successful manufacturer in the history of the Le Mans 24 Hours.

    The race
    The world’s most famous endurance race was contested for the first time in 1923. Each year it attracts the best sports car drivers from around the globe and more than 250,000 spectators. Hollywood also set a cinematic monument with the iconic event. The 1970 film ‘Le Mans’ featuring Steve McQueen in the lead role, driving a Porsche 917, is one of the best racing movies of all time.

    The circuit
    One of the fastest and oldest race tracks in the world, the 13.65 km Circuit des 24 Heures has a unique character. Aside from its legendary corners, Mulsanne and Tertre Rouge, the trademark of the race track is its famed Hunaudières straight, where top speeds of up to 400 kph have been reached. Around 75 per cent of a lap is taken at full throttle.

    The Porsche drivers
    Two Porsche teams make a bid for victory in the particularly competitive GTE-Pro class.

    The Felbermayr-Proton squad field the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR with Porsche works drivers Marc Lieb and Richard Lietz and are keen to continue their recent sterling performances. The outfit started the new World Endurance Championship with second place at Sebring and followed up with their first win of the season at Spa. At Le Mans the pair receives back-up from Wolf Henzler (Germany), with whom they won in Le Mans in 2010.

    Sharing the cockpit of the Flying Lizard Motorsports 911 are Porsche factory pilots Joerg Bergmeister (Germany), Patrick Long (USA) and Marco Holzer (Germany).

    In the GTE Am class, where only last year’s vehicles are eligible to start and just one professional driver is permitted per car, Italians Gianluca Roda and Paolo Ruberti join forces with team owner Christian Ried in the second Porsche 911 GT3 RSR run by Felbermayr-Proton to campaign for their second win in the World Endurance Championship.

    The Porsche 911 GT3 RSR
    As the top model in the range of customer racing vehicles from Porsche Motorsport, based in Weissach, Germany, the 911 GT3 RSR headed into the 2012 racing season with extensive modifications. Particularly noticeable is the widening of the body by 48 millimetres. The aerodynamic design package is supplemented by new engine air intake ducting. The 911 GT3 RSR is based on the road-going 911 GT3 RS and is powered by a rear-mounted flat-six engine, tuned to produce 460 hp.

    Porsche and Le Mans – an unprecedented success story
    In 1970 at the wheel of a Porsche 917 short-tail, Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood clinched the first of 16 overall victories for the most successful manufacturer in the history of the race.

    The most successful Porsche pilots at Le Mans are Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell with four wins each.

    In 2008 and 2009, Porsche won the LMP2 class with the RS Spyder. And the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR was another safe bet at Le Mans over the last years: in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2010 Porsche customer teams claimed class victories with the racer from Weissach – and they are back to do the same this year. Porsche has notched up a total of 98 class wins in Le Mans.

    The schedule
    Free practice was on Wednesday, June 13, between 16.00 to 20.00 hours. Afterwards from 22.00 hours until midnight, the first qualifying took place and the 911 GT3 RSR of Flying Lizard Motorsports driven by Patrick Pilet clinched top spot in the GTE Am class. The Felbermayr-Proton team 911 GT3 RSR of Marc Lieb took sixth place in the GTE Pro class.

    The teams have a further chance to improve their times in two further qualifying sessions on Thursday, June 14, from 19.00 to 21.00 hours and from 22.00 hours to midnight.

    The 24 hour race itself starts on Saturday, June 16, at 15.00 hours.

    TV tip
    Eurosport International and Eurosport 2 alternately broadcast the entire race live. The final two hours of the free practice plus the first two qualifying sessions will be aired on Eurosport 2 live. Eurosport International will telecast the third qualifying as well as the warm-up live.

    Comments before the race
    Hartmut Kristen, Head of Porsche Motorsport: “Through receiving double points for the World Endurance Championship, Le Mans has gained even more importance - particularly for our customer team Felbermayr-Proton who are contesting the new long distance championship with the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR.

    “With their GTE Pro class win in Spa, the dress rehearsal for Le Mans went perfectly for our works drivers Marc Lieb and Richard Lietz. The current status of the Balance of Performance in the WEC makes it very difficult for our competitors in this category. Two important rivals have been permitted to compete with much larger restrictors than the 911 GT3 RSR and this gives them a considerable power advantage. Because around 75 percent of a lap is taken at full throttle as well as the long straights in Le Mans, this makes it even more upsetting. Aside from meticulous preparation, we and our customer teams will rely on balanced driver squads, the quality of the mechanics and the reliability of the Porsche 911. The less time spent in the pits, the better the chances are of achieving good results at a 24 hour race.

    “We are well represented internationally in the GTE Am class with five vehicles and an exciting mix of young drivers and seasoned campaigners. This clearly shows that our private teams also support the development of young talent. Le Mans is extremely competitive so the decisive factor is who makes the least mistakes, or better still, none. The real challenge comes during the early morning hours on Sunday and it is crucial not to have suffered any setbacks by midday.”

    Marc Lieb: “Racing at Le Mans is the best. Even when we drivers are totally focused on our job, you are still grabbed by the fascination of this extraordinary race. This year it’s not just about prestige but more about earning points towards the World Endurance Championship. And just like in Spa recently, we will have to fight hard from start to finish.”

    Richard Lietz: “A win in Spa is of course greatly motivating, but Le Mans is still a totally different kettle of fish. A place on the podium would be nice, but it’ll be very, very hard to achieve. On the other hand, anything is possible at a 24 hour race where reliability is especially important.”

    Wolf Henzler: “I’m really looking forward to racing with Marc and Richard again in Le Mans. After all, we won this fantastic race together back in 2010. Our main goal this year is to bring as many points home as possible for the Felbermayr-Proton team and Porsche towards the World Endurance Championship.”

    Joerg Bergmeister: “Le Mans is the greatest race of the year. It’s a fabulous challenge for each and every driver and team. The extremely fast Circuit des 24 Heures is one of my favourites. I’ve competed here every year since 2002, so this marks my eleventh time. Still, every year I look forward to Le Mans.”

    Patrick Long: “The key to success is teamwork. Especially in Le Mans you not only need a quick and reliable vehicle but an experienced pit crew.”

    Marco Holzer: “Le Mans is an absolute classic. It’s a real tough race, especially in the GTE class with many good cars and many good drivers. In 2010 I stood on the podium as a rookie which was an indescribable feeling. Now I’m looking forward to my first race with the Flying Lizard crew.”

    Patrick Pilet: “Le Mans holds a very special meaning for me as a Frenchman. I’m thrilled to be able to race here.”

    The World Endurance Championship
    Sports prototypes and GT vehicles contest the World Endurance Championship, for which double points are awarded in Le Mans. They are divided into four classes that start together but are classified separately:

    LMGTE Pro class: This class is reserved for slightly modified standard sports cars with 440 to 500 hp and a minimum weight of 1,245 kilograms (e.g. Porsche 911 GT3 RSR).

    LMGTE Am class: Like the LMGTE Pro, but the regulations stipulate that only last year’s cars are eligible and there must be no more than one professional driver per vehicle.

    LMP1 class: Sports prototypes with up to 550 hp and a minimum weight of 900 kilograms.
    LMP2 class: Sports prototypes with around 440 hp and a 900 kilogram minimum weight.

    Fully European
     
    The car makes its presence felt from afar, its deep, low-frequency rumbling V8 motor delivering an unequivocal message of its impending arrival.
     
    The European Camaro is similar in content to the 2SS model offered in North America. The new model, Europe's first, features an all-new FE4 suspension that was developed specifically for this side of the Atlantic. The set-up – characterised by optimised stiffness and lateral stability for high-speed performance and manoeuvrability – has proven so popular that it will be also offered in the US. The FE4 suspension package features retuned front and rear dampers, plus new solid front (23mm) and rear (24mm) stabiliser bars.
     
    “Our objective was to create a more precise sport suspension with greater road-handling capability," says Al Oppenheiser, Camaro Chief Engineer. “We applied lessons learned from extensive track testing to better the suspension geometry for flatter cornering, a more neutral balance during hard turns and minimised understeer at the limit.”

However, the Camaro is the only vehicle in its class to offer a standard Head-Up Display (HUD) that projects information, such as speed and stereo selection, on the windscreen. Ultrasonic rear parking assist with camera and six airbags are standard, as are ISOFIX anchor points.

    Active Fuel Management
     
    The manual models have a combined consumption figure of 20mpg while the automatics return 21.5mpg. CO2 emissions are rated at 329 and 304g/km respectively.

    The awe-inspiring Top Gear Live Stunt Team is taking another deep breath and is aiming for a further World Record when it attempts to become the first to successfully complete a spectacular double loop-the-loop feat.

    Called the ‘Deadly 720’, the nail-biting stunt has never been performed before and will be staged in front of record 15,000 strong live audiences during four action-packed shows at this weekend’s Top Gear Festival in the Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban, South Africa (16-17 June).

    The Deadly 720 is the latest in a succession of daring exploits performed by the Top Gear Live Stunt Team as an integral component of the hugely popular Top Gear Live Shows that have wowed more than 1.2 million fans at venues all around the globe.

    The daredevil team was the first to successfully complete a single loop-the-loop in an in-door arena but now is attempting to ‘do the double’ for the first time in history."Top Gear Festival"

    “We’ve designed some pretty outlandish car stunts over the past four years from car bungees in Moscow’s Red Square to jet propelled pushbikes, but this double loop the loop has the greatest chance of going wrong,” admitted Top Gear Live Creative Director, Rowland French. “We’ve completed a single loop the loop as the climax to the previous Carmageddon Tour more than 80 times, and you know barring any acts of God, the buggy will make it through. Adding the second loop, though, multiplies the danger by more than two and creates the very real possibility of the buggy falling out from the top of the second loop. There are absolutely no margins for error, which is probably why no one has ever been mad enough to try it before.”

    The extreme stunt will be attempted in a specially converted buggy fitted with hand controls to lock out the accelerator pedal during the stunt as the extreme G-forces experienced would thrust the driver’s foot onto the standard throttle and result in a near-certain crash. Speed is one of the critical factors and the dashboard is fitted a large light that switches from red to green when the buggy is travelling at precisely the required velocity to complete the loops. Meticulous calculations have revealed the thin line between success and failure: enter the loop 2mph too slowly and the buggy will fall out of the top of the loop; a small increase in speed results in extra G force and could cause him to black out.

    “Absolutely everything has to be in perfect alignment from the suspension compression and precise steering angle to the exact speed of entry,” confirmed French. “If one element falls out of sync, there is no chance of the driver making the second loop. It is this split second nature of the stunt that allows so much to go wrong, and what terrifies me.”The Top Gear Live Stunt Team will attempt the Deadly 720 stunt"

     

    DEADLY 720: THE FACTS...

    • Deadly 720 is the World’s first double loop the loop stunt and will be attempted by the Top Gear Live Stunt Team during the Top Gear Festival staged in Durban, South Africa on 16-17 June.
    • The two loops are each 8 metres tall and comprise of 8 tons of steelwork (16 tons in total).
    • If you uncurled both loops, the total length of track would be 58 metres.
    • 28 tons of ballast weight is used to prevent the loops from moving during the stunt.
    • The buggy is fitted with special hand controls to lock out the accelerator pedal during the stunt as, during testing, the extreme G forces involved forced the driver’s foot to bury the throttle and resulted in the buggy crashing on exit of the loop.
    • The dashboard is fitted with a large shift light that goes from red to green when the buggy is at sufficient speed to complete the loop. If you think that takes the fun out of it, think again; with only a 30m run up the shift light will be changing to green a mere five metres before going vertical – not a lot of time to jump on the brakes and abort.
    • The buggy must enter each loop between 24 and 26mph to successfully complete the stunt. Failing to achieve the minimum 24mph risks the buggy falling out at the top of the loop. An increase of speed from 26mph will result in an extra G of force on the driver and could cause him to black out.
    • The buggy must exit the first loop with sufficient speed to enter the second loop at the prerequisite speed, a challenge that’s far easier said than done. The buggy needs a minimum 30 metre run up to gain enough speed to complete the first loop but only has 8 metres between the two loops to regain the few mph lost during the first 360.
    • Entering the loop has been likened to hitting a flat wall at speed as it takes less than a second for the buggy to go vertical.
    • Suspension is everything: if the car bottoms out during either loop its chassis will grind the steel floor and swipe off vital MPH just when the driver needs it most. This is well known because the team destroyed two buggies due to suspension issues when testing the single loop in 2009.
    • As the team was so concerned regarding the potential dangers when first designing the single loop in 2009 the engineers created a full size, remote control buggy that could be sent through the loop – and potentially fail – without injuring a driver. Only once it had successfully completed a number of loops was a real driver allowed behind the controls.

    Maranello, 11 June 2012 – Ferrari Classiche recently took delivery of one of the more interesting cars ever to leave the factory – a 275 GTB4 that originally belonged to legendary American star, Steve McQueen who took delivery of the car in San Francisco when he was on the set filming Bullitt.

    Under the provisions of the certification process, a Ferrari can only be authenticated if it is to exactly the same specifications as when it left the factory. To this end, the new owner wisely decided to return the car to its original coupé form and Ferrari Classiche has undertaken the restoration reproducing the roof and buttresses with hand-beaten steel panels.

    Ferraris continue to be an excellent investment, as has been shown in a recent report by Business Week on a private treaty sale for $35 million of a 250 GTO built for Stirling Moss.

    A world record price that celebrates the 50th anniversary of the launch in 1962 of this homologation special (hence the designation Gran Turismo Omologata), of which just 36 examples were built, and which achieved a seemingly endless series of victories in GT racing in the early 1960s, culminating in three consecutive Manufacturers' titles in 1962, ’63 and ’64.

    The Ferrari 250 GTO has been revered in classic car circles for decades for its combination of thoroughbred looks, performance and motor sports heritage and, in 1990, a 1962 example set a then record auction price of $10,756,833. This world record was to stand for 18 years until it was beaten in 2008 by another Ferrari, a 1961 250 California sold by RM Auctions in collaboration with Sotheby's in Maranello for $10,910,592. That record was again beaten in 2011 by the sale in Pebble Beach of a 1957 250 Testa Rossa for $16.39 million.

    A considerable contribution to the interest for classic Ferraris in recent years has come from the company’s direct involvement, with its dedicated department providing certificates of authenticity which testify to the originality of a car. Set up in 2006, Ferrari Classiche has to date processed over 3,300 certification requests using the company’s exhaustive archive records and original designs.

    The organisers of London Motorexpo (11-17 June; www.motorexpo.com), have announced that Michal Vlcek, a first-year student in the Vehicle Design department at London’s Royal College of Art (RCA), has won the competition to design an innovative electric-powered car of the future.
     
    RCA students were tasked with designing the electric vehicle of 2032, using the packaging advantages of an electric motor to move way from the formulaic styling of many modern-day passenger cars.  The judges’ only other stipulation was that the concepts should be capable of accommodating four adults and their luggage.
     
    Vlcek impressed the judges with the quality of his artwork and the lateral thinking of his ideas.  The electric motors that power the car are installed within the wheels themselves to maximise interior space, and the rear lights are mounted on aerodynamic vanes that also help improve the car’s stability.  Instead of traditional doors that can interrupt the car’s exterior lines, Michal’s design opts for an innovative hinged access at the nose to allow occupant access from the rear of the car.
     
    Highly commended was the submission from Israel-born Nir Siegel.  His design was for a quirky and petite city car, which places the driver in the centre of the cabin for maximum visibility, aided by an unusual diamond-pattern seating arrangement."Highly Commended" "Nir Siegel"

    Motorexpo has always moved with trends in the wider automotive industry, with a number of electric and hybrid powertrain vehicles being displayed and available for test drives during the 2012 event.  Motorexpo differs from traditional motor shows in that it is free to enter and allows visitors to get up-close to, and even interact with the 250-plus vehicles being exhibited.
     
    Organisers are expecting a record 425,000 visitors to view more than 250 cars on display at Motorexpo 2012 – including a number of vehicles being shown for the first time in the UK.  Cars making their UK motor show debut will include Jaguar’s XF Sportbrake premium estate, the all-new BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class compact car, and the all-new second-generation Kia cee’d family hatchback.
     
    Most cars on show – including many of the latest electric and hybrid powertrain models – can be sat in and, as an added attraction, visitors can even get behind the wheel of many cars for a full test drive around the Canary Wharf leisure district and the wider public road network.
     
    There are no tickets and no queues, with easy access to the event via one of the wide variety of transport options available.  Visitors can take the bus, London Underground or Docklands Light Railway.  Alternatively, there’s also space for 2,900 cars within Canary Wharf’s four underground public car parks.

    McLaren Automotive, rather than resting on its laurels, has instead announced a package of enhancements that will make its 12C high performance sports car even more invigorating to drive yet even easier to live with.

    Headlining the changes is a 25PS power increase.  It takes the maximum output of the mid mounted, twin turbocharged V8 engine to 625PS (616hp) to give yet more vivid acceleration at track speeds with no loss in efficiency.  Modifications have been made by McLaren’s engineers to the 12C’s engine and SSG transmission increasing responsiveness.  Ease of use, a phrase not often associated with cars of this type, is further improved through a host of detail changes while a wider variety of paint, leather and wheel options give customers yet more scope for personalisation.  The 12C’s unique Intake Sound Generator (ISG) system, which controls the amount of engine intake sound heard in the cabin, is now programmable across three levels in all three Powertrain modes allowing the driver to select the amount of aural drama he or she wants to enjoy, whatever the road.  But one aspect that hasn’t changed is the 12C’s purposeful styling … apart from a subtle revision to the McLaren Speed Marque badge, that is.

    This latest iteration of the 12C, which at launch set a new benchmark among its competitors for power, efficiency and pioneering technology, is available to order now at a price that starts from £176,000 in the UK. Customers who have already taken delivery of a 12C are not being neglected, though.  Every 12C owner is being offered a package of upgrades, including the extra 25PS, at no cost, underlining McLaren’s commitment to its customers ensuring they enjoy owning their 12C as much as they do driving it.

    THE DETAIL: enhanced 12C overview
    The suite of upgrades to the 12C specification from October 2012 includes enhancements to the 12C’s engine and transmission, in addition to other functional attributes.

    A focus on drivetrain development has given McLaren Automotive’s engineers the opportunity to increase the 12C’s 3.8-litre twin turbo V8 output from 600PS to 625PS. The redesigned engine mapping has not altered the remarkable efficiency of the M838T engine, with 12C CO2 emissions remaining at just 279 g/km, and fuel economy recorded at 24.2 mpg (combined).

    Modification of the 7-Speed SSG transmission to which the 12C’s high-powered engine is mated has resulted in crisper throttle response and improved clutch control for gear changes that are both faster and smoother.

    The 12C features an innovative Intake Sound Generator (ISG). This system works by controlling engine intake noise within the cabin at differing levels, depending on the Powertrain mode selected for the car.  Moving up through Normal, Sport and Track Powertrain modes enhances the aural drama and driving experience of the 12C, with engine noise in the cabin changing when throttle power is applied and revs increase. With the 2013 specification 12C, the driver will be able to select the level of engine noise delivered in each mode through an electronic menu accessible via the instrument cluster.

    Improved usability and occupant comfort
    A new door entry system is a feature of the new 12C. A small button mounted on each door replaces the 12C’s touch sensor system. In line with customer feedback, this modification is intended to simplify the user experience. The ability to unlatch each door using the 12C key fob will be retained.

    To improve safety, an enhancement will be made to the headlight activation settings of the 12C. With the ‘AUTO-lights’ mode selected, the 12C’s headlights will be automatically switched on when rain is detected by the windshield-mounted rain sensor.

    The 12C’s Climate Control System will be modified exclusively for 2013 models. In addition to the standard ‘AUTO’ function of the system; new cars will be supplied with systems inclusive of ‘AUTO LO’ functionality. This new setting enables the desired cabin temperature to be reached in the quietest way possible, using lower fan speeds.

    New options to personalise the ultimate McLaren 12C
    McLaren Automotive is committed to innovating through technology and design, and presenting customers with an exciting range of opportunities to specify their ultimate 12C.  Along with the power upgrade and technical revisions announced for the 2013 model year 12C, comes a selection of tempting aesthetic and functional options which may be added to the comprehensive standard 12C specification.

    A stunning new high quality paint finish will be added to the options list for the new 12C. Volcano Yellow joins the ‘Elite’ set of paint finishes available for the revised model, and promises to be as spectacular as the popular Volcano Orange and Volcano Red finishes selected by many 12C customers since the car was launched in 2011.

    A new wheel design and wheel finish available on multiple wheel designs will be offered to future 12C owners.  A new 5-spoke lightweight-forged wheel may be specified for the 12C and is available in multiple finishes. Standard Silver, optional Stealth and eye-catching Diamond Cut finishes are available on this new wheel design, as well as forged wheel designs available to order from the existing range. The Diamond Cut wheel finish is first finished in Graphite Grey, then diamond cut to reveal the forged metal surface. The entire wheel is then finished in a protective coat, which adds a high quality gloss to the appearance.

    "McLAREN MP4-12C"

    An exclusive new 12C interior trim has been developed by McLaren Automotive for 2013 model year 12Cs, which is a higher quality and more naturally textured leather than that in the current 12C options list.  If selected, exclusive semi-aniline leather is applied to all major interior surfaces including doors, seats, dash and the centre console. The new interior option includes flat piping around the perimeter of the seat and along the edge of the door card insert. The piping finish will be in Carbon Black unless requested in McLaren Orange, Harissa Red or Stone Grey. Three levels of this new interior trim will be available to order from June:

    • Full Semi-Aniline Leather: Carbon Black Leather on all surfaces, along with optional colour-matched flat piping
    • Semi-Aniline Leather with Colour Perforated Inserts: As Full Semi-Aniline, with the addition of colour perforated door inserts, seat inserts and matching piping
    • Semi-Aniline Leather with Alcantara Inserts: Carbon Black Leather to all major surfaces, with black Alcantara seat inserts and optional Alcantara door inserts, along with optional colour-matched flat piping

    Racing Green, which to date has been an option for 12C buyers, and ‘Driver Zone’ interior options, will now be reserved for clients of McLaren Special Operations (MSO).  Selecting the ‘Driver Zone’ option will see a customer meet with MSO stylists to create a colour and trim scheme in the area immediately around, and including, the driver's seat. This is specified in contrast to the interior trim specified elsewhere in the cabin.

    One Touch Seat Return is an added function of optional heated and electric seats for new cars, and will be available as an update to existing vehicles. With the pull of a lever, the seat will return to its position when the driver last exited the 12C. Easy-Exit - whereby the seat retracts to its most rearward position to allow for unhindered exiting of the 12C - will remain a feature.

    Vehicle Lift will be available as an option on 2013 model year vehicles. The system allows the 12C to be raised front and rear for improved ground clearance. This technology permits the vehicle to be raised by up to 40mm at the front and 25mm at the rear, and may remain in position at up to 60kph.

    In car entertainment is to be enhanced without any charge to customers of new and used 12Cs, through upgrades to the Meridian audio equaliser settings. The Meridian audio equaliser will be offered with Pure, Expanded and Extreme settings, progressively enhancing levels of bass and treble.

    From race to road: McLaren Speed Marque
    The McLaren badge, which carries the official moniker ‘Speed Marque’, will be modified and available in two different new finishes. Mounted on the front luggage lid, rear deck, steering wheel and wheel centre caps, the subtly revised Speed Marque may be specified in Rocket Red/Silver as standard, or Stealth/Silver as an option.

    McLaren Automotive Sales and Marketing Director Greg Levine said: “The ‘Speed Marque’ is an important symbol of McLaren’s successful heritage in motorsport, and we are very proud that it features prominently on the 12C. The ‘Speed Marque’ has evolved significantly through the last five decades, from its origin as the ‘Speedy Kiwi’ on Bruce McLaren’s race cars in the 1960’s, through to the 1980’s and 90’s where the McLaren name featured a red chevron symbol alongside it on our Formula 1 cars.  Now displayed on the new 12C, it embodies our core product value of fast, streamlined movement and represents the pedigree of a multiple World Championship-winning Formula 1 team.”   

    Specification revisions a reward for existing 12C owners
    Refinements to the 12C technology package will also be made available to McLaren’s valued existing 12C customers.

    To date, McLaren Automotive has appointed 38 world-class retailers in 22 countries across the globe.  Each McLaren retailer in the new global retail network is now contacting existing 12C owners to offer each the opportunity to upgrade their current cars to a revised specification. Enhancements to existing 12Cs include the 625PS power increase introduced for the new 12C, and will be scheduled for application to cars later this year.

    A groundbreaking sports car inspired by Formula 1
    Performance and practical refinements will enhance the 12C’s innovative standard technical specification, in which Formula 1 DNA runs through every component. 

    With a one-piece moulded carbon fibre ‘MonoCell’ weighing just 75kg at its heart, the 12C features advanced vehicle dynamics technology including Brake Steer and Proactive Chassis Control.  Brake Steer is a technology McLaren introduced to Formula 1 in the 1997/98 MP4-12 race car and defines the 12C’s ability to set incredible lap times, by braking the inside rear wheel of the car through corners so that the 12C may retain the perfect ‘racing line’ on track.  ProActive Chassis Control is a suspension technology lauded by 12C owners due to its unique ability to provide executive car ride quality at any speed and on uneven road surfaces, yet its network of interconnected suspension hydraulics modify the amount of grip and roll control available when the driver adjusts the 12C’s ‘Handling’ settings through ‘Normal’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Track’ modes.  The 12C is the only sports car among its competitor set that allows the driver to select ‘Powertrain’ and ‘Handling’ settings completely independently of each other, so that the driving experienced is optimised to their preference and environment.  With a combined fuel consumption figure of 24.2mpg achievable from the car’s lightweight 3.8-litre twin turbo V8 engine, the 12C offers owners the option to enjoy driving a high performance sports car over greater distances and in a multitude of environments more than ever before.

    Star Trek actor Sir Patrick Stewart is now ready to boldly go where no Starship Enterprise commander has ever gone before. The 71-year-old movie legend – who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the iconic sci-fi series – has just passed his official ARDS racing driver test and is ready to compete in a special Celebrity Challenge race at this summer’s Silverstone Classic powered by the AA.

    “I’m relieved and delighted,” said Stewart who passed both written and driving tests required to obtain a MSA competition licence at a rather damp Silverstone. “It’s such a fast learning curve from the moment you first step into the car. At one point it was raining quite hard out there; I could hardly see out of the windows… and you really do need to be able to see out of the windows when you’re driving fast!”

    Despite the conditions the test was not about to defeat a man who has travelled around the universe at warp speeds. “I can’t say it wasn’t a challenge at times but I’ve enjoyed it very much,” he reported. “I’ve watched too many professionals at work on the race track over the years to feel that I can now call myself a fully-fledged racing driver but it was exhilarating that’s for sure and I’m looking forward to putting my new skills into practice.”

    Though new to Silverstone, the Captain’s log does reveal that Stewart has a previous track record. “The only time that I’ve raced was on the Long Beach Grand Prix course in California which was in a Pro-Celebrity Toyota race and I really, really enjoyed it. But I’ve been in retirement for the last 10 years,” he grinned before explaining why he was now making a comeback. “It was too irresistible… the chance to drive a great British sports car at Silverstone, what could be better?”

    The final frontier for Stewart will come in a special, star-studded Celebrity Challenge race being staged as one of the highlights of this summer’s Silverstone Classic powered by the AA (20-22 July), the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival.

    The Hollywood actor will line up on the starting grid alongside a host of personalities from showbiz, sport, TV and music all racing around the famous Silverstone Grand Prix circuit in lightweight, competition prepared Morgans capable of topping 130mph. Those taking part include award-winning chef Heston Blumenthal, lifestyle guru Jo Wood, ‘Comedy Dave’ Vitty from Radio 1, Sky Sports presenter Vicky Gomersall, legendary rocker Brian Johnson from AC/DC and Strictly Come Dancing’s Brendan Cole.

    The Celebrity Challenge takes place on Saturday 21 July and will raise funds for the Birmingham Children’s Hospital, the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK and the RPJ Crohn’s Foundation.

A terrible earthquake struck our region and the people we know, and together we want to help the families of the victims in this time of need.     The principal offer of the auction, which can be accessed via www.ferrari.com or directly onwww.ferraristore.com, is a 599XX Evo, the extreme, non-homologated sports berlinetta with a reserve of €1.35 million. The car will be built specifically for this occasion and will have a number of unique features, including a special plaque dedicated by Ferrari’s Chairman, Luca di Montezemolo, and the Scuderia Ferrari drivers, Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, who will hand the car over to the lucky new owner at the Monza Grand Prix weekend in September.

    There are a number of rare pieces from the world of Formula 1, starting with a 2008 V8 engine, with which the Scuderia won its 16th Constructors’ World Championship title, with a reserve of €50,000.     Maranello, 31 May 2012 – Ferrari will open an international on-line auction to raise funds for the families of the victims of the earthquakes that have rocked the Emilia-Romagna region since the 20th of May.

    In the days leading up to the auction next week, www.ferraristore.com will dedicate a section to this important initiative which sets out to contribute significant sums to those families who have lost loved ones.

    The auction will include important and rare items, such as a 599XX Evo, the extreme, non-homologated sports berlinetta with a commercial value of €1.3 million. This extreme sports car incorporates the very best of Ferrari technology, the result of on-going Research and Development activities in the GT division and advanced experimentation in F1. The 599 XX Evo features a package of performance-enhancing technical features for the exclusive, dedicated track-based research and development programme for the 2012-2013 seasons.

    There will also be a strong Formula 1 theme, starting with a V8 engine along with racing suits and helmets donated by the Scuderia’s drivers, Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, as well as numerous items of memorabilia from the works racing cars from past seasons.

    Also featuring in the auction will be a selection from the Ferrari Store, including Prancing Horse watches.

    As soon as news about the earthquakes came out, Ferrari clients and collectors from around the world spontaneously contacted the Maranello headquarters to offer their contributions. Once again the generosity of Ferrari’s enthusiasts will enable the company to provide support to those most hit by the tragedy. A demonstration of solidarity that, in recent years, has contributed to the reconstruction in Abruzzo after the earthquake, as well as the building of two after-school facilities in Ishinomaki in Japan after last year’s disaster for which Ferrari contributed over 80 million Japanese yen.
